My Top Book Recommendations on Conscious Aging

What does it mean to be an elder in a youth-obsessed world? Just when we are finally figuring out who we are and what are deepest values are, we are expected to retire and fade away. Fortunately, there is a different way to approach these rich and vibrant years.

A couple of things to note.

  1. I will be adding to this list as I discover more books. I think these are an excellent place to start!

  2. I use Amazon affiliate links AND I recommend you purchase from your local book store if possible. Amazon links are great for a couple of reasons in my opinion. First, you can read reviews of the books, find out more about the author and even look inside the book. Second, if you use a Kindle, it makes it easier for you to download the book. I also receive a very small compensation from Amazon and there is no extra cost for you.

From Ageing to Sage-ing: A Revolutionary Approach to Growing Older

Written by Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and Ronald S. Miller. This book forms the basis of my course Awakening the Sage Within.

From the book description: In this inspiring and informative guide, Reb Zalman shares his wisdom and experience with readers. He shows readers how to create an aging process for themselves that is full of adventure, passion, mystery, and fulfillment, rather than anxiety. Using scientific research--both neurological and psychological-- Reb Zalman offers techniques that will expand horizons beyond the narrow view of "the present" into a grand and enduring eternity. By harnessing the power of the spirit, as well as explaining exactly how to become a sage in their own community, he gives readers a helpful and moving way to use their own experiences to nurture, heal, and perhaps even save a younger generation from the prison of how we typically regard aging.

Kitchen Table Wisdom:: Stories That Heal by Dr. Rachel, Naomi Remen, M.D.

I wish I had this book when I was diagnosed with melanoma. The stories that are shared in this book are inspiring and encouraging. I've gifted it to a few people and they have all enjoyed it. Perfect for someone who is struggling with their health.

From the cover: This remarkable collection of true stories draws on the concept of "kitchen table wisdom"-- the human tradition of shared experience that shows us life in all its power and mystery and reminds us that the things we cannot measure may be the things that ultimately sustain and enrich our lives.

The Gift of Years: Growing Older Gracefully by Sister Joan Chittister

I took this book out of the library three times and decided I had to have my own copy. I have used it in several workshops. I love so much about the book. It is a great format to read a chapter a day over several weeks and reflect on the wisdom contain in it.

From the book description: Not only accepting but also celebrating getting old, this inspirational and illuminating book looks at the many facets of the aging process, from purposes and challenges to struggles and surprises. Central throughout is a call to cherish the blessing of aging as a natural part of life that is active, productive, and deeply rewarding. Perhaps the most important dimension revealed lies in the awareness that there is a purpose to aging and intention built into every stage of life. Chittister reflects on many key issues, including the temptation towards isolation, the need to stay involved, the importance of health and well-being, what happens when old relationships end or shift, the fear of tomorrow, and the mystery of forever.
