3 Reasons to Set Goals

I just joined a group whose sole purpose is to provide a twice monthly check in on how the members are progressing on their goals. It is called a Mastermind Accountability Group. The women participating have varying goals that include, among other pursuits, fitness, finances and career.

It has me thinking about why some people don't set goals - and I think there are a lot of people who don't. As much as I get the importance of goals I don't always take the time to articulate them myself.  So, I thought I would tell you why I think it is important at any stage of life to have goals.

1. Achievement - One of the biggest rushes we can get in our lives is from achieving a goal. Most of our lives are fairly routine. I'm not suggesting we aren't having fun or engaged in any way but try setting a goal and really going for it. Ask anyone who has walked across a platform at a graduation ceremony or crossed the finish line in a race or who has raised money biking 50K for a charity. Having a goal can give you a sense of achievement and accomplishment unlike anything else.

2. Boundaries - We only have so much time. We only have so much energy. Having goals provides you with a great way to make decisions and put up boundaries. I recently reached out to someone I wanted to spend time getting to know a little better. His response was, "I would love to get together. I'm working on a book right now and I have targets to meet each week. I am spending every morning writing. I could get together later in the afternoon but it won't be for a few weeks." I appreciated how he let his goals create boundaries. And now I REALLY want to have coffee with him!

3. Clarity - Setting goals forces you to get clear on what is most important to you right now. What area of your life if you were to really focus on it would provide you with the greatest results?  Would it be your health? Your finances? Your career? Only you can make the decision. Creating goals will force you to make some choices and get clear on what you really want.

There are lots of other benefits to having goals. I've created a free online course to get you started. Get started.
